Vermiculite

VERMICULITE is basically Hydrated Phlogopite Mica, which has the remarkable ability to expand to many times its original volume when heated, a property known as Exfoliation. It is a safe inert material light in colour and helpful in the absorption of Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium. It will not rot, deteriorate or mould. Adding to the garden or in potting soil increases water and nutrient retention and also aerates the soil, resulting in healthier and more robust plants.
